About the Department

The department of sociology is the U.G. Department of the college established in the year of 1960. The subject ‘Sociology’ contributes to the society in the pursuit of education, learning and research at the highest level of excellence. The department of Sociology is committed to excellence in teaching, research and extension activities in the field of rural and urban areas in Vidarbha region by providing necessary guidance and support to students
The department has Ph.D. Research Center.
The department organizes different types of programs like visit to orphanages, old age home, child care home etc.
Students actively participate in social survey and study different types of social issues.

  • To provide quality teaching, learning, research and consultancy in social science by creating, preserving, transmitting and utilizing knowledge.
  • To strengthen sociological research pertaining to the issues in the region. To strengthen research in the thrust area of the Department, namely Sociology of Development & Environment. And Sociology of Weaker Sections.

Career Opportunities in Sociology

  • Human Resources Management - A part of being a sociologist includes interacting with a large number of people every day. This is the foundation of being an HR specialist who analyses job roles, decides if a candidate is suitable for a particular job, interviews the candidates to arrive at a decision.
  • Survey Researcher - As the name suggests, survey researchers conduct surveys to make various decisions. These include observing patterns of social and political issues, health and culture, and how consumers are reacting to a particular product or service. They create questionnaires, form focus groups, and get clear answers. Sociologists make use of data collection and statistical analysis techniques to gather evidence and create well-informed reports for public and private organizations.
  • Journalist - For candidates with flair of writing and a good grasp of observing mass attitude and analyze social issues, journalism is the ideal option. Top news agencies and publications in India are always on the lookout for professionals adept in understanding social circumstances.
  • Family Counselor - Sociologists are adept counselors, and that’s why their expertise can be utilized in family counseling. Family counselors use their observation and critical thinking to assess different familial or marital issues and provide guidance in mitigation.

  • To start post-graduation in Sociology.
  • To introduce a certificate course in sociology.
  • To conduct Remedial Coaching for the backward and underprivileged students.
  • To strengthen research in the thrust areas such as marginalized communities.
  • To undertake research project especially regarding the local issues and problems in the region.
  • To organize seminars and workshops for students.
  • To undertake extension activities and establish linkages with the local communities.
